Galway Bay fm newsroom - Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary has expressed his horror at learning of the discovery of remains at the site of the former mother and baby home in the town.
In a homily to mass goers at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Bishop Neary said the discovery points to a time of great suffering for the children and their mothers.
Opening his homily, Archbishop Michael Neary told mass goers at the Cathedral of the Assumption that he was sure they would understand if he put the gospel aside on this occasion to talk about the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.
He said he was shocked and horrified to learn of the large quantity of human remains discovered on the site which, upon analysis, match the timescale of the operation of the home.
He spoke of the 'emotional wrench' women suffered in witnessing the death of their babies or having them put up for adoption, and reflected on the impossible difficulty in attempting to understand the pain they were forced to endure.
He assured those in attendance that although the archdiocese was not involved in the running of the home, any material even remotely related to the investigation has been handed over to the commission of investigation.
He also stated that the dignified re-interment of the remains in consecrated ground is a 'top priority'.
As he closed his homily, Archbishop Neary said although the work ahead will be difficult, it is a necessary step on the path to the truth - and he pharaphrased Jesus himself when he stated that ultimately, the truth always sets us free.
