Galway Bay fm newsroom - Test excavations will get underway shortly on the N59 between Bunakill and Maam Cross.
The county council is seeking archaeological consultants to carry out surveys along a 5km stretch of the route, commonly branded 'the worst road in Ireland'.
The consultants will be required to excavate test trenches in seven areas along the N59 between Bunakill and Maam Cross, and carry out a survey of an early 19th century kiln and sections of an old, disused road.
They'll also survey other historical features including old road remnants dating to the 1800s, a schoolhouse, and a Victorian shooting lodge.
The successful archaeology consultant may also be appointed Project Supervisor for the construction stage of the road upgrade project.
The deadline for submission of tenders to the county council is this coming Friday. (12/1)
