New figures have revealed that last month was the worst ever April on record for overcrowding at University Hospital Galway.
683 people were forced to wait on trolleys for admission - a significant increase on the figure of 576 recorded in April of 2018.
It was also the worst April on record for Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe - with 179 waiting on trolleys, compared to 135 in April of last year.
Nationally, University Hospital Galway was the third most overcrowded hospital in the country last month, behind Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick.
