Galway Bay fm newsroom - The American Ambassador, Edward F. Crawford, will later this month rededicate a plaque in memory of five members of the American Navy who died in a plane crash on the west Connemara coast in 1944.
While in Connemara the Ambassador will be given the distinction of the “Freedom of Connemara” by the Clifden and Connemara Chamber of Commerce.
During war-time in Europe - September 14th, 1944 - a crew of 10 on an American war plane had flown across the Atlantic when they were hit by foul weather on the Connemara coast.
The plane crash landed in the sea west of Ballyconneely and 5 on board died.
The other five were rescued and treated by local people and taken to the Clifden District Hospital.
On September 19th, American Ambassador, Edward F. Crawford will rededicate a plaque erected in memory of the dead Americans on the Ballyconneely coastline.
