Galway Bay fm newsroom - Almost 4.5 million euro has been sanctioned by government to deliver improved homes for older and disabled people in Galway city and county.
The allocation is an increase of over 401 thousand euro on 2021.
Over 2.6 million euro has been allocated to Galway County Council to support the measure, with 935 thousand allocated to Galway City Council.
Under the scheme, grants of up to 30 thousand euro are available to assist disabled people in carrying out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs.
Additionally, grants of up to 8 thousand euro are available to assist older people to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out on their homes.
The fund provides 80% Exchequer funding through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, with the remaining 20% in funding coming from Galway County Council and Galway City Council.
Minister for Disability and Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte was critical of the county council on its drawn down of funds for such grants for a period last year and says processing of applications have seriously ramped up since then and hundreds of vital grants have been approved.
