Almost €2.5m in unpaid fines at Galway District Court since 2020

New figures show that unpaid fines worth almost €2.5m have been racked up at Galway District Court in recent years.

They were obtained by Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Murchu, who says the national figures are "extraordinary".

Nationally, almost €45m in district court fines are outstanding - and over €2.4m of that relates to Galway District Court.

Other notable figures include €13m in unpaid fines in Dublin; €3.4m in Limerick and €3.2m in Cork.

On the other end of the table, Carrick on Shannon was the most compliant district court - with outstanding fines of just €133 thousand.

MEP Cynthia Ní Murchu says the overall situation calls into question the efforts being made to collect fines.

She points out an act introduced in 2014 provides for alternatives to imprisonment for unpaid fines - such as installments, attachment to salary or social welfare, or community service.

MEP Ní Murchu says it's all well and good to say it takes time to collect - but that's less understandable when many of these fines date back five years.
