50 patients on trolleys as UHG struggles with overcrowding

Galway Bay fm newsroom - UHG is under pressure today with 50 patients on trolleys.

It's the second most overcrowded hospital in the country this afternoon.

The cold snap has led to delayed discharges and backlogs across the health service in recent days.

Today's overcrowding comes as the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation is calling for the first two weeks of March to be declared an emergency period.

Almost 700 patients spent time waiting on trolleys at UHG during February.

Nationally, the trolley figure reached over 10,700.

The INMO says the extended period of extreme weather has created backlogs and extra pressure on the health service.
