Galway Bay fm newsroom - Of the 67 thousand jobs created nationwide over the past 12 months - just 5 thousand of those were created in the west.
Dublin accounted for the largest figure - 33 thousand jobs - while the border region experienced a drop of some 3 thousand roles.
According to the Irish Independent, most of the jobs created in the past year are in the services sector - such as ICT, transport, hospitality, food and administration.
The figures from the CSO come as the government will today launch a one billion euro fund that aims to boost rural communities.
