Galway Bay fm newsroom - Rising sea levels caused by climate change could result in over 4,500 Galway coastal homes and businesses being at risk of severe flooding by 2050.
That's according to new research by Gamma Location Intelligence that shows over 3,800 homes and 678 businesses could suffer more frequent severe flooding over the next 30 years.
The results are based on a projected 2 degree rise in global temperature that will lead to both rising sea levels and more extreme weather events.
Galway is the 5th most at risk county nationwide, with Dublin, Louth, Clare and Limerick topping the list.
Nationally the new report shows more than 70,000 Irish addresses will be at risk, with 88 per cent of these being residential homes.
Senior Spatial Data Scientist at Gamma Location Intelligence, Richard Cantwell says reducing carbon emissions will help alleviate these effects.
