Galway Bay fm newsroom - Drink driving and speeding remain the biggest road traffic offences in Galway city with about 30 arrests per month.
That's according to the latest report from gardaí which has been presented at a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee.
Serious injury collisions were down by 40 per cent in the first 6 months of this year, compared to the same period last year.
However speeding detections in the city increased by a fifth while there was an increase in drink driving offences detected at checkpoints.
City Councillor Mike Cubbard asked the garda chief for Galway what measures could be taken to deter drink driving.
He mentioned that at a recent wedding, the bride and groom placed breathalysers in the hotel rooms for people to check if it was save to drive the morning after.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says it would cost money to hand out personal breathalyser kits to the general public but motorists should be warned that gardaí remain vigilent.
The garda report also shows that 24 offences by cyclists were detected by gardaí in the 6 month period.
