Galway Bay fm newsroom - 26 new beds are to be opened at UHG ahead of the peak winter season.
The beds are in a ward which was effectively decommissioned when the hospital opened its new 75-bed unit.
HSE Regional Health Forum chair Councillor Mary Hoade asked the HSE to outline the measures it has in place to deal with the high level of admissions generally experienced during the winter period.
The health executive says a number of measures are being put in place, including a second discharge officer, and a new strategy to assist with patient flow.
