There has been a 17 per cent drop in serious assaults in the city in the first 6 months of this year, compared to the same period last year.
The latest garda figures, which were presented to this week's meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee (22/7), show that there were 45 assaults causing harm reported in the city since January.
Meanwhile, there were 136 minor assaults recorded.
Chief Superintendent of Galway Garda Division, Tom Curley told the JPC that he needs a Sergeant and 3 gardaí on the beat on particular peak nights to prevent assaults
