13 per cent fall in drink and drug driving detections in Galway so far this year

Galway Bay fm newsroom - There was a 13 per cent fall in drink and drug driving detections in Galway between January and June this year.

According to figures from the Irish Times, 210 people in Galway were found to be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol so far this year.

This represents a drop in 31 detections compared to the same period last year - which saw 241 drink and drug driving detections in Galway.

The number of arrests for drink or drug driving fell by 9 per cent across the country during the first half of the year.

That's despite traffic volumes dropping off significantly during the Covid-19 lockdown.

However, the Irish Times reports 11 of the 28 Garda divisions saw increases in detections for drink and drug driving.

In Dublin they increased by an average of 24 per cent while the Roscommon/Longford and Kilkenny/Carlow divisions also saw a jump in arrests.
