The 13 million euro upgrade of Athenry Sewerage Scheme has been completed.
Uisce Eireann says the investment will reinforce and future-proof the town’s wastewater network for population expansion and economic growth.
The project involved extensive upgrades to the network infrastructure, reducing the risk of sewer flooding and addressing non-compliant sewer overflows into the River Clarin.
Cairde an Chláir, an association of local angling groups says the elimination of non-compliant sewer overflow into the Clarin will be beneficial to the long-term health of the river and its fish stocks.
The works have ensured that the treatment of wastewater is fully compliant with EU Directives and Wastewater Discharge License Emission Limit Values.
