1,200 patients admitted to UHG without a bed in April

Over 1,200 patients were admitted to University Hospital Galway without a bed in April.

That's according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

UHG was the second-most overcrowded hospital during the month of April.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha has described the consistent overcrowding in our hospitals as 'unacceptable' - especially during a month that is traditionally quieter.

Nationally, over 11,000 people, including 258 children, were admitted to hospital without a bed in April.

Ten percent of those were left on trolleys at University Hospital Galway, while Unveristy Hospital Limerick was the most-overcrowded with almost 2,000 on trolleys last month.

There were 191 patients left on trolleys at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe in April - one of its highest April figures in recent years.

As of today, 59 people are awaiting a bed in UHG, with two patients on trolleys at Portiuncula. ]
