The draw for the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup has been made. While both Galway universities have exited the competition, several Galway footballers are still involved with four of the remaining eight teams.
UCD v MTU Kerry - Belfield, Tuesday 28th January
The first quarter-final will see unbeaten UCD welcome underdogs MTU Kerry to their South Dublin campus next Tuesday. While UCD will be heavy favourites heading into this clash, MTU Kerry overcame a round one hammering by DCU to beat both UCC and MTU Cork, while UCD beat UCC by five points and their neighbours DCU by a single point in the second round. The Dublin college has two Galway players in their squad: Liam Costello (Milltown) and Darragh Varley (Clonbur).
TUD v UL - Grangegorman, Tuesday 28th January
Tuesday's second game will also see TUD welcome UL to Grangegorman on the north side of Dublin. Three-point wins over the University of Galway and St. Mary's saw TUD book their spot in the quarter-finals, while UL easily defeated ATU Galway, then suffered a one-point loss to University Ulster, before a round three playoff win over University of Galway was enough to set up the final-eight clash. TU Dublin have Rob Forde (Headford) in their squad, while UL has two Galway players, Jack McCabe (Corofin) and Conor Heneghan (Tuam Stars).
DCU v TUS Midlands - DCU, Wednesday 29th January.
TUS Midlands will travel to Dublin on Wednesday night where they'll take on DCU for the third semi-final spot. DCU hammered MTU Kerry 2-21 to 0-11 in round one before being pipped by a single point against UCD the following week. This week's 3-14 to 0-10 win over ATU Sligo kept their season alive. Meanwhile, TUS MIdland's two-point win over Maynooth in extra time of Round One followed by their five-point win over MTU Cork in round two saw them automatically qualify for the quarter-final. TUS Midlands have two Galway players in their ranks, Sean Kelly (Mountbellew Moylough) and Jack Dowd (Annaghdown).
Ulster University v Maynooth - Jordanstown, Wednesday 29th January
The final quarter-final will pit Ulster University against Maynooth on Wednesday evening. Maynooth lost to TUS Midlands after extra time in round one but came up trumps in round two, hammering ATU Donegal to set up this week's clash with St. Mary's where a 2-9 to 1-7 win saw them into the quarter-finals. The reigning champions Ulster University overcame ATU Sligo in round one before securing a one-point win over UL to claim their place in Wednesday's quarter-final. There are no Galway players involved in either squad.
