Unveiling ceremony at site of 1916 battle at Carnmore Cross

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A commemorative stone is being unveiled at Carnmore Cross this morning as part of the county-wide ‘Remembering the Rising’ programme.

The stone is located at the site of the engagement between the Castlegar and Claregalway Volunteers and the RIC.

The action resulted in the death of Constable Patrick Whelan – the only fatality of the Rising in County Galway.

The unveiling of the commemorative stone will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Constable Whelan at Bohermore Cemetery.
