Galway Bay fm newsroom – Strike action is looming at University Hospital Galway as the HSE is being asked to take immediate action over conditions at Emergency Departments nationwide.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says that if the HSE does not move to address a list of serious concerns by November, it’s members will undertake a ballot nationwide.
The INMO are calling for an immediate and independent health and safety review to be carried out at Emergency Departments nationwide, including at UHG.
Other concerns include unsafe staffing levels, the need for greater support from hospital management and the need for increased senior clinical presence.
The demand follows a meeting held yesterday between INMO representatives from across the country and Health Minister Leo Varadkar to discuss the situation.
It also follows the revelation earlier this week that UHG is among the country’s ‘worst offenders’ in terms of overcrowding.
The INMO says the HSE has until November to show it’s committed to making significant progress – or else it’ll commence a nationwide ballot of its members.
