New York 0-17 Roscommon 1-15
National Football League Division One Semi-Finalists Roscommon were given the fright of their Championship lives in Gaelic Park when New York came within a whisper of pulling off the biggest shock in GAA History last night. Fergal O’Donnell and Kevin McStay will no doubt spend the trip home incredibly relieved that they are through but in equal measure will wonder how they went so close to losing this Championship opener played under leaden skies on a day that looked more like an Irish winter than a New York early summer.
In the end it would be Senan Kilbride’s point that would be the difference but with Former Galway star Johnny Duane at the helm and players like Sligo’s Vinny Cadden in goal and Offaly’s Brian Connor, New York made a mockery of the underdog’s tag and in 70 minutes, justified their inclusion in the Connacht and All-Ireland Championship.
The game would be turned on one moment as New York had Roscommon under pressure throughout the game. Cathal Cregg was hauled to the floor by Ronan McGinley and Maurice Deegan immediately awarded the penalty. Ciaran Murtagh has been scoring for fun and he made no mistake firing past Cadden.
But New York never dropped the heads and as the second half wore on pushed and pushed, causing all sorts of problem and as the game entered the final moments Senan Kilbride’s point was all that separated the sides.
Despite Freeman’s best effort as the game entered in the final minute, Roscommon would hold on..Just.
