Galway Bay fm newsroom – An Bord Pleanala has refused planning permission for long-awaited upgrade works to the N59 between Maam Cross and Clifden.

The stretch of road, which forms part of the only national road in Connemara, has previously been described as one of the worst routes in Ireland.

In it’s judgement, the planning authority recognised that the section of road was substandard and in need of major upgrade works – but ultimately refused it on environmental grounds.
