Galway Bay fm newsroom – A proposal that roads funding for the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District be supplemented by funds from other municipal districts has met with opposition.
The matter was raised at a meeting of Tuam Municipal District councillors this week.
Councillors in the Athenry-Oranmore area have long campaigned for more roads funding, claiming that roads within this district experience the heaviest traffic volumes.
Roads funding in the County Council Budget is determined per kilometre.
Director of Services with the County Council, Liam Gavin, suggested at this week’s Tuam meeting that a perentage of top-up funds received from the Department be given from the four other municipal districts to Oranmore-Athenry.
Mayor of County Galway, Peter Roche, says he would oppose some of the Tuam area roads funding being given to another area.
Meanwhile, 800 thousand euro has been allocated to roads in the Athenry-Oranmore area to carry out repairs on roads damaged by severe flooding.
The Severe Weather Allocation funding is part of a county-wide allocation of six million euro and will be spent on 23 roads across the district.
Councillors were provided with a breakdown of the proposed works at a meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District – and many in attendance were unhappy with the allocations.
Councillor Malachy Noone says the people of Montiagh have been waiting six years for road repairs – and are still absent from the latest list.
