Galway Bay fm newsroom – A new volunteer coastal search unit has been established for the Oranmore-Maree area.
The unit has been setup in the wake of the search for NUI Galway student Michael Bugler, which saw hundreds of volunteers cover 30km of coastline following his disappearance on December 18th.
The body of the 20 year old law student was recovered from the water near Oranmore in early January following three weeks of searches.
Secretary of the new volunteer unit, Joe Kennelly, says health and safety is a major concern during such searches, which involve difficult and often treacherous terrain.
He says the coastline from Salthill to Oranmore-Maree will now be divided into nine search zones with the assistance of the Gardai, Civil Defense and the RNLI.
A public meeting on the Oranmore-Maree Costal Search Unit will take place on Monday week the 7th of March at 8pm at the Oranmore Lodge Hotel.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Joe Kennelly says the unit’s mandate is to organise the community and provide strong leadership during searches.
