Galway Bay fm newsroom – Leenane’s long-awaited new water treatment plant has been officially opened this morning following the completion of one million euro upgrade works.

A boil notice was imposed in July last year amid cryptosporidium fears, and affected 140 households in the area for over 13 months.

The investment in the water treatment plant will significantly improve water quality for over 200 people and businesses in the area.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister Richard Bruton and Minister of State Sean Kyne are in Connemara today to mark a series of significant engagements.

These include the launch of a major new Gaeltacht Education Strategy in Carraroe at noon, and the turning of the first sod on a new building for Clifden Community School at 3 this afternoon.

Minister Sean Kyne says the new treatment plant will play a vital role in the future development of Leenane while Aine O’ Toole from the Sheep and Wool Centre in Leenane says the lengthy boil water notice was a particular challenge to business in the area.
