Galway Bay fm newsroom – The HSE is being accused of wasting millions of euro on the storage of records for Galway’s public hospitals.
This weeks meeting of the Regional Health Forum West heard that over 700 thousand euro is paid to an external company each year to store healthcare records.
Councillor Padraig Conneely asked how the spend could be justified, when the HSE could build a storage facility on the 150 acres of land available at Merlin Park.
Chief Operating Officer Anne Cosgrave agreed and said while it would be the preferred option, it is not possible at this point in time.
She admitted to the meeting that such a facility could be built for the same cost of one year’s external storage – but limitations in capital funding are a major obstacle.
Councillor Padraig Conneely says it’s difficult to accept the waste of money when healthcare funding is badly needed elsewhere.
