Galway Bay fm newsroom – An 80 page document outlining Galway’s bid for European Capital of Culture status is to be handed in around now just hours short of the deadline.

The volume was collected straight from the printing press by the Galway 2020 team shortly after 11 this morning and barely had time to cool before its journey began.

The document outlines Galway’s rich and diverse cultural landscape in a bid to convince judges that Galway deserves the title for 2020 ahead of Dublin, Limerick and Waterford-Kilkenny.

It’s expected to be handed over to officials at the Department of Arts, Hertiage and the Gaeltacht around now just hours ahead of the deadline.

The next stage in the bid is a 30 minute presentation to be given to the European Panel of 12 judges in Dublin on the 12th of November.

The Galway 2020 team will give their presentation, and face an hour of questioning from judges – with the shortlist to be announced the following day on the 13th.

Our Reporter Lyndsay Hughes was in Brussels to speak to MEP Marian Harkin about Galway’s unique cultural identity ahead of the submission.

MEP Harkin says that if any county in Ireland deserves the title of Capital of Culture, it’s Galway, with its rich diversity of international culture.
