Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway is being warned to expect severe weather conditions this afternoon as Storm Abigail hits the county.
Met Éireann has issued an orange weather alert – its second highest warning level – as high winds are set to batter the city and county this afternoon.
Gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour are expected to hit Galway, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
The worst of the conditions are due to arrive this evening – with the alert remaining in place until six o’clock tomorrow morning.
Galway City Council says there’s potential for some localised flooding and heavy on-shore spray in the Salthill area along the promenade caused by high winds.
City Council Spokesperson Gary McMahon is advising people to avoid the prom from this afternoon.
