CORK City brushed aside the brave challenge of Galway United with four first half goals in this re-arranged Premier Division fixture at Turner’s Cross last night to close the gap on champions Dundalk to four points ahead of their big clash at Oriel Park on Tuesday night, October 11.

Right-back Dave Mulcahy was the unlikely hero with two goals while top scorer Seanie Maguire, Garry Buckley and Kevin O’Connor all got on the score sheet in an eight-goal thriller giving John Caulfield’s side a 4-1 advantage at the interval. Galway pulled a goal back making it 2-1 on 35 minutes when Killian Cantwell headed in Ryan Connolly’s free kick. Quick fire goals from Garry Buckley and Mulcahy again made it 4-1 at the interval in what was great entertainment for the 1,685 strong crowd.

Kevin Devaney made it 4-2 from Gary Shanahan’s pass after 63 minutes and four minutes later, Kevin O’Connor scored the fifth with a deflected free kick into the Shed end. Devaney had the final say with a third Galway goal in added time.
