Last years league finalists Galway made a winning start as they overcame Monaghan by seven points.
An excellent start from Galway saw them lead by 1-3 to 0-1 after 10minutes, Tracy Leonard scoring a goal inside 20seconds for the Tribeswomen.
Monaghan recovered to trail by just one point after the opening quarter. Galway though enjoyed the better of the exchanges until the break and led 1-12 to 1-6 at half time.
Megan Glynn got the second Galway goal early in the second half to extend their lead to 8 points. The Ulster side persisted and hung in there until five minutes from the end when Tracey Leonard netted her second of the day.
