Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City and County Councils are among 16 local authorities across Ireland who have voted against the proposed site for the new national childrens’ hospital.
The hospital is to be built at the St James’ site in Dublin 8 – however there has been widespread opposition to the choice of location due to congestion concerns.
Galway City and County Councils are among fifteen local authorities which have voted in favour of locating the facility at the 145 acre Connolly campus off the M50 near Blanchardstown.
The Connolly for Kids Hospital campaign says 80 percent of Ireland’s city and county councils have now shown support for the motion.
Under the plans, the existing children’s hospitals in Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght will shut, with staff transferred to the new city centre location.
A maternity hospital will also be built on the same site – but retired pediatrician Dr Fin Breathnach says it comes with many conditions attached.
