Galway Bay fm newsroom – Foróige club volunteer Cathy Killeen has been named the overall winner at the Galway City Mayor’s Awards.
The winners of the Annual Mayor’s Awards were announced at a ceremony at the Radisson Blu Hotel in the city last evening. (Tuesday 10/5)
The awards, now in their 13th year, aim to recognise and reward volunteers working in communities across the city.
Cathy Killeen was named the Galway City Council Volunteer of the Year for her long involvement with the Castlegar/Menlo Foróige Club.
Sean Stafford received the Arts, Culture, Heritage & Cúrsaí Gaeilge award for his long-standing work with the Taibhdhearc Theatre.
The award for Residents and Local Areas went to Tony McDonagh for his dedication in looking after the grounds of the Forthill Cemetery.
Marian Maloney Nolan was crowned the winner of the Community Service & Social Inclusion category for her work with the disabled.
Violet Gavin was named the Older Volunteer of the Year for her committment to the Positive Mental Health Foundation initiative in secondary schools.
The Sports Volunteer of the Year Award went to Samuel Lukombo Sambu in recognition of his voluntary activity with the Galway Football Association.
John O’ Toole took home the Children and Youth Award for his dedication to Scouting Ireland in Galway over the past 50 years.
Ginalee Healy was named Young Volunteer of the Year for her voluntary Fundraising activities for a number of Groups across the city.
Overall, over 100 individuals and groups received certificates from the Mayor in celebration of voluntary activity in community life in the city.
Each of the winners received a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €500.
