Galway Bay fm newsroom – The contract for the construction of a new Garda headquarters in the city has been officially awarded.
JJ Rhatigan and Company had been previously identified as the preferred bidder for the development, but the contract for the 15 million euro development was finally signed at the weekend.
Almost one year ago, the Office of Public Works said that eight firms had been shortlisted for the major construction contract.
The new Garda headquarters will be built on a greenfield site at Renmore – facing GMIT’s Dublin Road campus.
The 15 million euro project provides for a five storey building with basement level car-park on a two acre site.
It will also feature secure landscaped courtyards.
Construction of the new Divisional and Regional Headquarters was first announced in July 2012 as part of a government stimulus package.
It’s hoped that following the signing of the contracts at the weekend, preliminary works can get underway shortly.
