Galway Bay fm newsroom – Former Labour City Councillor Colette Connolly has been co-opted to the city council.

She will fill the seat left vacant by her sister Catherine, who was elected as an Independent Dáil deputy for Galway West/ South Mayo following last month’s general election.

The co-option took place at a special meeting of the city council at College Road this afternoon. (21/3)

Colette Connolly, who lives in Shantalla, was not present at today’s meeting due to a prior engagement.

The co-option vote was to take place on April 11th, but today is the closing date for eligibility to vote in the Seanad elections, so a special meeting was called.

A former Labour councillor, Colette Connolly has dropped her party affiliation since her defeat in the 2014 local election, and will now serve as an Independent representative.

There were 9 councillors present at the meeting this afternoon, and Cllr Padraig Conneely proposed that the co-option vote be postponed until the next meeting on April 11th.

However, the other 8 councillors voted in favour of the co-option, which was proposed by Councillor Peter Keane and seconded by Councillor Terry O’Flaherty.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News at today’s meeting, Deputy Catherine Connolly said she put a lot of thought into her replacement on the city council.
