Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost 90 thousand euro has been announced for flood relief measures along the northern stretch of the Gort to Tuam motorway.
The OPW has sanctioned 84 thousand euro for the installation of piping along the long-awaited motorway to allow overflow into the River Clare.
It follows a full review of the drainage system for the motorway agreed at a high level meeting earlier this year amid claims that the route was responsible for severe flooding across Galway.
It’s expected that the works will now get underway following the completion of a hydrological report on the proposed scheme.
Meanwhile, a further 9 thousand euro has been allocated for a study of the Ardacong, Marley and Fairymills areas in North Tuam which experienced severe flooding over the winter.
9 thousand euro has been allocated for a study of the Lakyle area of Craughwell while 18 thousand euro has been granted for the Blackrock area of Gort for embankment works and a drainage system.
Deputy Sean Canney says the motorway works have been hard sought since the unprecedented flooding of recent months.
