Galway Bay fm newsroom – A city domestic violence refuge has had to turn away almost 600 women and children so far this year due to a lack of space.
The figures have been revealed by COPE Galway Waterside House ahead of International Day Opposing Violence Against Women, which takes place this week. (Wed 25/11)
COPE says due to a lack of private rented accommodation across the city and county, many women who wish to move on from the shelter are unable to do so.
As a result, 242 women and 355 children who need shelter and protection have been sent elsewhere.
COPE Galway is calling on landlords across the city and county to make their properties available within the rent caps for people in need.
